In April 2017, the government of Sri Lanka signed a USD 54.8 million loan agreement with China Development Bank for the Katana Water Supply Project (WSP) to ensure safe drinking water supply to all 45 Grama Niladdhari divisions in Katana Divisional Secretariat. It involved the construction of three towers (at Bambukuliya, Ewariwatta and Thibirigaskatuwa) and laying of installation pumps, transmission and distribution mains. Project achieved over 40% of physical progress in 2019. As of March 2021, the WSP implemented by National Aero-Tech International Engineering Corporation (AVIC) was completed. It has created over 1,000 jobs and provided safe drinking water to 20,000 people in Katana. It will also supply water to Bandaranaike International Airport and Bandaranaike Industrial Zone.
This project is one of the three water supply projects under implementation in Sri Lanka funded by the China Development Bank. The other two projects are Thambuttegama Water Supply Project (USD 102.5 million ) and Balance of USD 400 Million Facility for Priority Water Supply Projects (242.66 million)
