The excavation work of the tunnel under Karnaphuli River began on February 24, 2019. The tunnel project aims to connect the south and north portions of the Chattogram district. The project is planned to be completed at an estimated cost of BDT 8,446.64 crore. Of the total cost, China is providing BDT 5,505 crore while the rest is released by the government of Bangladesh. 52% work of the tunnel project was completed before the outbreak of pandemic covid-19. Presently, 72% work is done and the project is expected to be completed in December 2022. However, the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) expressed concern over a weak traffic management system to handle the traffic pressure at the tunnel. The CMP further hinted at the likely traffic congestions and accidents in that area.
