The revival of KCR was included in CPEC in the 6th JCC held in Beijing in 2016. The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) and ECNEC approved the revival of 43 KM long KCR on Public Private Partnership mode at an estimated cost of $ 1.9 billion, with maximum finances coming from China. The revival of KCR included construction of 24 stations, procurement of 162 locomotives each with a capacity of 250 passengers. In 2022, The transaction advisory i.e. Public-Private Partnership Authority (P3A) approved the transaction structure of KCR. P3A decided the private sector will finance, develop and run the project on commercial lines.
