The government of Bangladesh, in 2010, invited China to develop and modernize the Chittagong Port. At that time, Bangladesh planned to develop the port and raise its bulk cargo handling capacity at an estimated cost of USD 8.7 billion. China pledged USD 9 billion for the transformation of the port. Later in 2019, Bangladesh granted access to China to its two largest seaports i.e. Chittagong and Mongla. Albeit China’s aid for port development is a pursuit of mutual benefit, western media has accused China of asserting its maritime expansion agenda via the development of ports in the Indian Ocean region.
