Shanghai Electric Group approached the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) in May
2016 and sought a license to set up a coal-fired power project with an estimated generation capacity of
1,320 MW in in Thar Block-I. it secured license in 2017 and civil work/mining started in October 2019
when Government of Pakistan signed an implementation agreement with Shanghai Electric group. So
far, 665 work is completed and 2000 jobs were created during the construction phase.
